About
Wayne Derman is a specialist sports physician and Professor at Stellenbosch University, where he leads the Division of Sport and Exercise Medicine. In addition, he holds appointments as a Travelling Professor at Lund University in Sweden, Co-Director of the IOC Research Centre of South Africa, and Director of the FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence in Stellenbosch.
Leadership
Wayne has provided medical leadership at the highest levels of sport. He was Chief Medical Officer for South Africa at the Olympic Games in Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004, and at the Paralympic Games in Beijing 2008 and London 2012. Since 2011, he has served on the IPC Medical Committee, later becoming Chair and Medical Director at the Paris Paralympic Games.
Research
Wayne’s research spans injury prevention, athlete health, and Paralympic Sports Medicine. He has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed publications, including articles, book chapters, and policy papers. Recognized internationally, he is also a highly sought-after speaker on sports medicine, exercise science, and athlete wellbeing.
Awards
Has received multiple honors for his contributions to sport and health. These include Fellowship from the American College of Sports Medicine, the Val Schreire Award for Cardiovascular Research, the Paul Harris Award from Rotary International, and the South African Department of Health Award for Excellence in Health Care.
